The kids here do something similar for sound effects - they jam a smaller drinks bottle between the rear (knobbly) tyre and the brake mechanism, so that it makes an engine sound when they ride. It's a variant of clipping a piece of card to the seat stay so that it fouls the spokes to make a motorbike sound that was popular when I was young, so very long ago.
