What's happening to the Yarra Trail, I wonder?

Last week it got ploughed up between the St Kev's boathouse and MacRobertson Bridge. I can't find anything about the works on the Parks Victoria or the Bicycle Victoria web sites. But I can't imagine that "they" are going to leave it as a rough dirt track.

So does this mean we're going to get the pathway resurfaced? Actually, not just resurfaced - completely replaced. That would be great because it was a pretty lumpy ol' stretch of bitumen.

Update: 9 May

I'd even checked on the VicRoads web site but it only occurred to me this morning that it's probably the local council's jurisdiction. But I didn't think of looking it up with Yarra BUG. Duh.

Information about this project seems to be a bit hard to come by - not that I'm complaining, just curious about what's actually going to happen. Thanks to the comment by cfsmtb I have my answer from the minutes of the City of Yarra Bicycle Advisory Committee Meeting of 19 April 2006 (PDF file):

Paths in City of Yarra

Justin Hanrahan from Councilís Open Space area provided an update on this and

other projects.

Reconstruction of Main Yarra Trail ñ MacRobertson Bridge to Gardiners Creek

  • Contractor has been appointed to build this path
  • It will be 4m wide in places and 3.5m in others

  • Justin can arrange for ramps to allow riders onto the Boulevard and off again at the eastern and western ends of the path as part of the project

  • Some trees will be removed but overall gain in tree numbers.

  • Some poles to be removed

  • Path duplication to be rationalized

  • Timber bridges to be removed

  • Path to be asphalt

  • Works will take 10 weeks and expect to be completed by mid July

  • Council is contributing $250,000 and state government $50,000 via Sport and Recreation department

That all sounds great and I am very pleased that this work is going ahead. I never imagined that this section of the trail would get a revamp, so thumbs-up everyone involved!

Simple, the surface between Gardiners & Mac Bridge is being completely redone. "They" are the sub-contractor employed by CoY to do the job. We were fully briefed on this by Yarra Councils Open Space rep at the last Yarra Bicycle Advisory Committee. YarraBUG put in a letter of support to CoY for Sport & Rec to fund the redevelopment.
